Anup Talao is a square pool with a central platform surrounded by low jalis, reached by bridges from four sides. At the northern end is the Diwan-I-Khass, a two-storeyed facade with an intermediate balustraded balcony carried on lotus brackets. Now referred to as Akbar’s hall of private audience, it is also occasionally identified as his Ibadat Khana and has been suggested that it may have functioned as the storehouse of imperial gems and jewels. Immediately south-west of the Diwan-I-Khass is the Panch Mahal, this colonnaded pavilion rises in pyramidal fashion in adiminishing series of terraces. The Panch Mahal was originally provided with jail screens so that imperial women could look down unobserved.
